Arctic Ecology – Joint Lesson with Presdales School

As part of our School Twinning Project, on Tuesday 19^th October the 11^th Grade “Orcas” took part in a joint lesson with students from Presdales School to discuss ecological problems of the Arctic regions.

The lesson started with short presentations in Russian by our students on four ecological issues that they considered the most relevant. Then the Presdales students had the chance to ask questions in English, and finally the students had the opportunity to chat to each other about teenage life.

Presdales is a prestigious girls’ secondary school located north of London, which is special in that students are offered the chance to learn Russian up to their school-leaving certification. The students were extremely happy to communicate with native Russian speakers for the first time, even though they found the experience quite challenging.

For our “Orcas”, on the other hand, who have a near-native command of English, discussing ecological problems presents no difficulty at all. In order to benefit the Presdales students, the “Orcas” had to put themselves into the roles of Russian teachers, preparing short presentations that could be easily understood by students with an intermediate level of language.

We hope that we will repeat the experience many times in the future and build up a strong co-operative relationship with our new twin school.

Экология Арктики – совместный урок со школой Presdales

В рамках нашего школьного проекта Twinning, во вторник, 19 октября, ученики 11-х классов «Orcas» приняли участие в совместном уроке со школьниками Presdales School по обсуждению экологических проблем Арктики.

Урок начался с коротких презентаций наших студентов на русском языке по четырем экологическим вопросам, которые они считали наиболее актуальными. Затем у студентов Presdales была возможность задать вопросы на английском языке, и, наконец, у студентов была возможность поговорить друг с другом о подростковой жизни.

Presdales – это престижная средняя школа для девочек, расположенная к северу от Лондона. Особенностью этой школы является то, что учащимся предоставляется возможность выучить русский язык до получения аттестата об окончании школы. Студенты были очень счастливы впервые пообщаться с носителями русского языка, хотя им это показалось довольно сложным.

С другой стороны, для наших «Orcas», которые практически свободно владеют английским языком, обсуждение экологических проблем не составляет никакого труда. Чтобы быть  полезными студентам Presdales, «Orcas» должны были взять на себя роль учителей русского языка, подготовив короткие презентации, которые могли быть легко понятны студентами среднего уровня.

Мы надеемся, что мы повторим этот опыт много раз в будущем и построим прочные отношения сотрудничества с нашей новой школой-побратим.
